Sun, Moon & Rising Signs, What’s The Difference?

What’s the difference, and how to discover yours?

If you’ve ever read your horoscope and thought, That doesn’t sound like me at all, there’s a good chance there’s more to your astrological story. Your Sun sign is only one small piece of your natal chart — your Moon and Rising signs reveal entirely different layers of your personality, emotions and the way you move through the world. Together, these three placements form your Big Three, giving you a much richer and more personal picture of who you are beyond your Sun sign alone. Let’s break that down a bit further.

Your Sun Sign: Your core identity, ego, sense of self and the qualities you consciously express. Who am I? Your identity, ego, purpose and the qualities you grow into.

Your Moon Sign: Your private inner emotional world, inner needs and how you process feelings. Your moon sign reveals what makes you feel safe behind closed doors. What do I feel? Your emotions, instincts, inner world and emotional needs.

Your Rising Sign: The ascendent sign that was rising on the Eastern horizon as you were born. This sign is associated with your outward presentation, first impressions and how you approach the world. The lense to which you view the world and others see you. How do I meet the world? Your outward expression, first impressions and way you approach life.

Your Big Three: Think of your big three as different parts of your astrological personality.

Together, they provide a much more rich picture of your astrological makeup – as compared to making judgements purely on your Sun sign (which is most commonly done).

If you’ve ever felt like you don’t fully relate to your Sun sign, you aren’t alone. That’s because you aren’t just an embodiment of your Sun sign alone. Your natal chart contains the Sun, Moon, planets, houses and aspects. Your Sun sign might describe one part of you beautifully, while your Moon or Rising signs may explain another part that you’ve never quite understood.

Astrology is a whole chart, not just a single horoscope.

To discover your Big Three, you will need three pieces of information.

  1. Your date of birth
  2. Your exact time of birth (hours & minutes plus am/pm)
  3. Your place of birth

Your Sun sign is usually determined from your birth date. Your Moon sign required your birth date and location. Your Rising sign is particularly dependent on your exact birth time and birth location as the Ascendent changes approximately every two hours.

If you aren’t too familiar with mapping this our yourself, an online Ephemeris will assist you to discover your planet placements at birth.

Once you map your Big Three, the uses for this information are practically endless. Use it to understand why you react the way you do to certain situations and pinpoint what it is you need to unlock self care and inner peace. Unveil hidden mental blocks and grow into the most authentic version of yourself.

So, what are you waiting for? Take the time to get to know yourself on a deeper lever. Discover your Big Three.

Blessed be, loves x
